Bookkeepers in Demand
Bookkeeping is one of the few careers that allow you to determine your work schedule. Once you earn a Bookkeeper Certificate you can choose when and how much you work (full time, part time or contractual) and where you work (whether in an office or from home).
Bookkeeping is especially suitable for individuals who are detail oriented, like varied assignments, enjoy working with computers and financial data, and who want to interface with diverse people in varied roles.
Among the key tasks that Bookkeeping Specialists can expect to perform are summarizing budgetary information, preparing financial statements and reports, recording daily transactions, balancing records, and processing payroll.
Internship Opportunity
To gain professional experience and to complete the Bookkeeper Certificate, students can participate in an outstanding internship program in a real-life office environment. Students receive one-on-one assistance to prepare for the internship. Student interns often find full-time employment through internships once they have earned their certificates.
Earn a Certificate
SRJC offers two certificates in Bookkeeping and Accounting: Bookkeeper and Account Clerk and Payroll.
Bookkeeper - 24.5 units
- Most advanced bookkeeping certificate - complete in 3-4 semesters
- Prepares students to become a full-charge bookkeeper – summarize financial data, prepare financial statements
- Office routines and techniques, electronic calculators, computer software programs – Excel, Access, Quickbooks, others
- Includes an elective for a paid internship applying bookkeeping skills
Account Clerk and Payroll - 16 units
- Can be completed in one or two semesters
- Prepares students for entry-level Accounts Payable/Accounts Receivable Clerk and to work in business, government, payroll services companies and accounting firms
- Focuses on basic bookkeeping, records management, data entry, spreadsheets, basic computerized bookkeeping software, office equipment use
Flexible, Quality Instruction
SRJC offers flexible day, evening, weekend, and online classes at the Santa Rosa and Petaluma Campuses. Instruction is delivered in various formats, including online, face-to-face, and hybrid. SRJC's student-centered, industry driven curriculum covers critical workplace skills, including communication, teamwork, problem solving, project management, and systems development.

An SRJC Career Services Advisor is available to assist certificate completers in making the transition from college to career. Students may use this free service to plan their job search, prepare a resume, practice interview skills, and identify job opportunities.
